Due to low temperatures in winter, the edge banding effect is also reduced. In view of this situation, Joya's technical department provides the following recommendations:
1 Temperature Settings
The three heating components of the glue applicator—pressure plate, glue hose, and glue application roller—should have their temperatures increased by 10-15°C above the original settings. It is recommended to set the melting temperature at 145-155°C and the glue application roller at 140-155°C, ensuring that the adhesive has good fluidity and bonding strength at the moment of bonding between the glue, edge banding strip, and board, avoiding problems of false bonding and weak adhesion caused by low temperatures.
2 Glue Application Settings
(1) Increase the glue application amount by approximately 10-15% compared to the summer usage, ensuring that the glue has sufficient open time and the edge banding strip is firmly bonded to the board. Core objective: Ensure that the glue layer completely covers the cross-section of the substrate without interruption or missed glue, guaranteeing bonding integrity.
(2) Coordinated control of pressure roller pressure and edge banding speed: Maintain pressure roller pressure at 0.2-0.25MPa. Insufficient pressure can easily cause air gaps at the interface, leading to false adhesion; excessive pressure may cause the glue layer to be squeezed out or material deformation.
(3) Appropriately increase the edge banding speed: By shortening the exposure time of the glue layer in low-temperature air, reduce the risk of premature curing of the adhesive.
3 Preheating
(1) Turn on the preheating system: Open the board preheating heating lamp and the edge banding strip warming box on the edge banding machine. Preheat the substrate to 15-35°C: Eliminate the "cold core" phenomenon of the material, avoiding false adhesion problems caused by excessive temperature difference between the substrate and the glue;
(2) Preheat the edge banding strip to 20-35°C: Improve the wetting property of the back coating adhesive layer and enhance adhesion to the substrate.
(3) In the morning when turning on the edge banding machine, when the set temperature is reached, do not rush to start edge banding. Let it continue heating for 10-15 minutes to allow the glue to fully melt;
4 Preparation Work
(1) Replace with winter edge banding adhesive in time;
(2) Workshop temperature should be maintained at ≥15°C (ideal range 18-25°C), humidity controlled at 40-60%; It is strictly forbidden to place equipment or materials in areas with drastic temperature differences such as air vents and door/window gaps.
(3) For winter edge banding, before starting work in the early morning, use a waste board for edge banding. After edge banding, mark and record with a marker pen. After about 30 minutes to 1 hour, manually peel off the edge banding strip to check whether there are problems of false bonding and weak adhesion due to low temperatures, to avoid large quantities of defective products caused by false adhesion. Also check whether uneven glue application and uneven pressing cause one side of the edge banding to have strength while the other side does not;
(4) Edge banding strip back coating quality screening: Prioritize batches with stable back coating processes. Low-temperature environments will amplify back coating defects (such as smooth surfaces, insufficient adhesion, etc.), easily leading to delamination problems later. It is recommended to conduct sampling adhesion tests for each batch of materials.
(5) Substrate temperature balancing treatment: For substrates stored outdoors or just received, they should be left standing in the workshop for 24-72 hours before cutting, until the material temperature equilibrates with the workshop environment temperature, avoiding material stress deformation or bonding failure caused by internal and external temperature differences.
Note:
These usage recommendations are reasonable suggestions provided based on product characteristics. Due to differences in customers' raw materials and production process conditions, adjustments should be made according to actual production situations. Customers are advised to conduct small-scale tests before mass production to determine the usability of the product and process.
